The Harvard Medical School and Semmelweis University program has been re-launched and offers a unique training opportunity for young professionals with a passion for clinical research, according to Semmelweis.hu. The Harvard Medical School’s Clinical Science Scholars program at Semmelweis University (CSS) provides participants with an in-depth understanding of the latest advances and best practices in clinical research, broadening their knowledge of research methodology and enabling them to be confident in preparing and conducting clinical trials and research, analyzing and interpreting research data, and learning how to successfully apply for funding and lead clinical teams by the end of the nine-month training. During the CSS program, participants will work in groups to discuss and solve the problems raised, complemented by monthly webinars and more than 85 recorded online presentations.
The program is structured around three workshops: one in Budapest, one online, and one in Boston, and the curriculum is organized in five modules with lectures, discussions, and exercises on epidemiology, research ethics, biostatistics, clinical research, leadership, and teamwork, with eminent lecturers. In addition to the core curriculum, the optional modules on secondary analysis of clinical trials, genetic epidemiology, or cost effectiveness and healthcare decision-making allow the training to be tailored to the individual needs of the participants.
As part of the Harvard Medical School’s Clinical Science Scholars program at Semmelweis University, participants will also develop a research proposal, with the top ten submissions being presented in a webinar and the top three at the final workshop in Boston. Dr. Béla Merkely pointed out that the first cohort of the program was launched in Budapest in 2023, with several participants from Central Europe. “Semmelweis University will host the CSS program again in 2024, offering an excellent learning opportunity for early career doctors and healthcare professionals, PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and residents,” emphasized the Rector. In December 2022, the heads of Harvard Medical School and Semmelweis University in Budapest signed a cooperation agreement. The program started in July 2023, and is scheduled to run until June 2026. The world-renowned American university is responsible for the curriculum and course delivery. Semmelweis University will cover half of the cost for 50 Semmelweis students to participate each year, for which the university has a budget of USD 250,000.
To apply for the CSS program, the submission of a CV, cover letter, and letter of recommendation is required. The deadline for early application and sponsorship is May 12. Applications close on May 26, 2024.
