The city of Szeged has expanded its geothermal district heating system with a HUF 2.4 billion investment, the Construction and Transportation Ministry said on Thursday, according to a report by state news wire MTI. The investment will cut gas consumption by over 2.2 million cubic meters a year. Szeged has built the biggest geothermal district heating system in Europe, after the one in Reykjavik, in recent years. The system now heats 27,251 homes and 469 institutions, saving 27 million cubic meters of gas annually.

The project, undertaken by Geo Hoterm, was awarded HUF 1.1 bln in European Union support.
