The Student Robotics team of the Department Electrical and Computer Engineering of Peloponnesian University, based in Patra, had targeted to be the top in its field. And they succeeded. They ranked first in the national finals of the Olympiad Educational Robotics WRO-Hellas 2019 and will represent Greece in the final phase of the Olympiad in November in Gyor, Hungary, where they will compete teams from all over the world.

The team’s coach, Sotiris Christodoulou, said in Kathimerini newspaper that “the success of our team is not accidental. Since January, the students have been working for many hours. Their willingness to deal with something other than student’s close obligations and the flame I saw in their eyes when they first spoke to me about the idea, was enough to promise that I would support them. ”

ESDALab-WRO designed and planned a robot that can map, detect and transport small cubes of varying colors on larger cubes. The small cubes represent plants with different climatic needs, while the larger ones represent a different (adjustable) climate in a green house. Mr. Christodoulou mentioned to Kathimerini that the robot had to be modified very often in order to produce the desired result. Indicatively, the final form was finalised just a few days before the beginning of competition.

With their morale raised, students are working to improve the accuracy and speed of the robot’s movement, with the knowledge that they compete against teams with greater tradition in Robotics. Student Panagiotis Arvanitakis, who performs as assistant coach, said that “having already participated in a global competition in Doha, Qatar, we know exactly what to expect and competition will be much greater there. But we believe in our potential and together as a team we will try for the best. ”
