Budapest is getting ready for major transport renovation projects which are planned to be started next year. Among others, suburban railway (HÉV) lines will be renewed, there will be new trams and trolleybuses, and P+R parking will be added. A total of nearly 50 kilometres of HÉV lines will be renewed. According to the new EU timetable, construction contracts for suburban railway lines H5, H6 and H7 must be signed by the end of September 2024, reads an article by Magyar Építők.

On the basis of the recovery plans adopted by the European Commission, the specific works contracts for the 46 km of upgrading on all three lines must be concluded by the end of September 2024, after the public procurement procedures have been completed. By the end of 2025, 50% technical completion of the works should be achieved, and all projects must be completed by the end of June 2026.

The changes presented in the working document also show that the EU budget for the modernization of the three suburban lines has been reduced from EUR 698 million to EUR 515.6 million. The new figures show that overall:

  • 46 km of HÉV lines and power grid will be upgraded
  • 10 stations will be upgraded and upgrades will be made to provide barrier-free access
  • the government will build 1,000 P+R parking spaces around each station
  • 1500 B+R bicycle parking spaces will be built
  • three intermodal hubs will be built, allowing passengers to make direct transfers between buses and HÉV trains.

The document also details the purchase of 51 trams and trolleybuses for EUR 147.1 million.
