MOL Group has inaugurated the largest green hydrogen plant in Central and Eastern Europe at its Százhalombatta (central Hungary) refinery. With a capacity of 10 megawatts, this facility represents a significant step in the company’s commitment to clean energy. The plant, which began production recently, will generate 1,600 tons of carbon-neutral green hydrogen annually. This hydrogen will be used primarily in fuel production, aligning with MOL’s goal to reduce its carbon footprint.

The technology used includes electrolysis from Plug Power, relying on renewable electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, producing no polluting by-products.

Ádám Horváth, MOL Group’s Director of New and Sustainable Businesses, highlighted the importance of this development: “green hydrogen is a clean and versatile energy source. It is used in fuel production to reduce our carbon footprint and is expected to play a role in the transport sector.”

The impact of the plant is substantial, as it will lower carbon dioxide emissions at the Százhalombatta refinery by over 25,000 tons per year.

The new technology is designed to replace a significant portion of the natural gas-based production process, which currently contributes to one-sixth of MOL’s total carbon dioxide emissions.

Looking ahead, the company plans to replicate this success with similar plants in Bratislava (Slovakia) and Rijeka (Croatia), with the latter expected to start operations in 2026. This expansion reflects MOL’s strategic focus on green energy and its commitment to advancing the smart green transition.
