Visit of Visegrad Group Ambassadors to Rhodes: The ambassadors of Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary (Erik Haupt) met on June 12 on Rhodes with representatives of regional, local government and economic authorities of the island.

The visit was an opportunity to discuss the current cooperation between countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Rhodes and its development opportunities, such as tourism, regional partnership, educational exchange, cultural and economic cooperation.

Ambassador of Poland Anna Barbarzak, Ambassador of Czech Republic Jan Bondy, Ambassador of Slovakia Peter Michalko and Ambassador of Hungary Erik Haupt met in the capital of the island with the Governor of the South Aegean Region Georgios Chatzimarkos, the Mayor of Rhodes City, Fotis Chatzidiakos, and the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Dodecanese Region, Ioannis Pappous.

During these meetings the role of the self-government dimension in building international contacts was underlined. “Public, cultural and self-government diplomacy play an increasingly important role in building contacts between countries, emphasized Ambassador Anna Barbarzak, and the role of local governments in this regard is invaluable. Poland is one of the countries in which self-government plays a strong role in building the country’s economic potential and we therefore look forward to bringing relations closer at regional level.”

Rhodes occupies an important place in Polish-Greek relations. The island enjoys great interest among tourists from Central European countries. Only in 2016 Rhodes visited over 100 thousand tourists from Poland visited Rhodes . Good relations are also favored by the fact that there is a group of Poles living in Rhodes whose welcomes the increasingly intensive bilateral economic cooperation.
