Artificial intelligence has evolved dramatically in recent years and – although it is often the subject of exaggeration or even catastrophic scenarios – it is enough to focus on real technological progress to realize its exciting potential. It is a given, that artificial intelligence systems can “understand” their environment in real-time and make optimal decisions.

The applications of artificial intelligence in practice have begun to find a wide field in recent years. Especially when the digital transformation became gigantic with geometric progress, while the “digitization” of daily processes, seemed to be able to provide solutions to many of the problems they face, especially the inhabitants of cities. The term ” smart cities »became synonymous with digital applications applied in settlements, municipalities and entire cities, with the aim of facilitating citizens.

Artificial intelligence in smart cities solutions was implemented by companies that had the vision and know-how to succeed. Among them, Hungarian ICT companies for the benefit of society gave great importance to the solution of every day, big problems such as the reduction of traffic in big cities.

Artificial intelligence enables machines to learn from experience, adapt to new data, and perform anthropomorphic projects. More specifically, the Hungarian technology companies Gamax and Racionet and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics collaborated to create an AI Smart Mobility system for the “smart” management of urban traffic using Artificial Intelligence. The innovative mobility management system CITY AI enables the city authorities to intervene in a timely and adequate manner but also to prevent traffic problems before they even occur. It offers direct and targeted traffic control in the urban center with immediate benefits of smooth traffic, reduction of traffic chaos and the frequency of road accidents.

The “understanding of the environment” by an artificial intelligence system, consists of the efficient processing of multiple signals and data streams. But how was CITY AI created?

Real-time data collection

The process of creating the system begins by collecting data related to vehicles, traffic light indicators, and factors such as temperature and weather conditions.

The data is collected real-time through the cameras located in the city -in the streets, in Parking but also in public places- and through various temperature sensor systems that are inserted in the urban landscape but also in the cars (V 2 X data collection).

Data processing through algorithms

The data is then processed directly using specialized AI software with special algorithms and then immediately activates a series of “improvement” actions, such as changing the signage of traffic lights, but also updating the driver through a simple mobile application that will notify him immediately if there is a better or faster way to get to his destination.

Collection and display of information

Finally, the system provides a sophisticated system for collecting and displaying all critical traffic information in a control center, while enabling different traffic services to be tested based on different criteria (eg increasing the performance of certain areas, giving priority to public transport, electric or emergency cars, etc.), which can later be applied to the whole city.

Smart solutions for the smartest cities

The advancement of artificial intelligence combined with the rapidly growing capacity of data storage and processing is leading to a major technological revolution. In a close-up scenario and within the IoT, billions of interconnected devices will send, systematically, data and events that will be automatically stored and processed by advanced Big technologies Data, Machine Learning, and AI. The use of such a smart traffic management and control system – like CITY AI – in an area, provides a higher quality of life, reduces the number of road accidents, and makes it more attractive to its inhabitants. The applications are unlimited, so it’s time to take advantage of them!
